Buddhists in Tripura celebrate 'Kathin Chibor Dan'

Hundreds of Buddhists have congregated in Tripura's historical monastery ‘Venuban Vihar’ to participate in the 38th 'kathin Chibor Dan' festival, one of their main religious festivals.

'Kathin Chibor Dan' means 'Offering of Difficult Monk Robe', an annual colourful festival.
Devotees say the festival is celebrated throughout the world within one month of the conclusion of 'Prabarana Purnima', the full moon day of the Hindu month of Ashwin. During 'Kathin Chibor Dan' new robes are donated to the monks. Many said they would pray to the almighty to restore peace in the world.

"This festival symbolises the highest sacrifice according to Buddhism. We would pray to God that peace is restored throughout the world. "We want to spread Buddha's message of peace and we condemn violence," said Sruta Ranjan Khisa, a devotee. The festival highlights the importance of sacrifice in life and hence the devout Buddhists offer prayers and then donate generously. "This festival is celebrated throughout the world within one month of the conclusion of the Prabarana Purnima and devotees gather and donate different things to the monks, a symbol of sacrifice," said Gautam Chakma, another devotee

"Through this festival we hope to regain peace for the entire mankind, not only Buddhist but for everyone," he added. Buddhists on Sunday lighted candles, offered prayers and donated books, pens, notebooks and tied sacred threads to 'kalpataru' or wishing trees, which they believe would fulfil their wishes. Many say the festival is also a time to introduce the younger generation to Buddhist philosophies and traditions that are slowly waning away.
