Nalanda University Open Again

On 1 September Nalanda University, a proposed global center of research and teaching excellence, is set to open its doors in the Buddhist pilgrimage town of Rajgir in Bihar State, India. Initially, 40 students have enrolled in two postgraduate courses offered by the schools of Historical Studies, and Environment and Ecology.
A plan to revive the university based on the vision of the old Nalanda was announced by India, China, Singapore, Japan, and Thailand in 2006. The East Asia Summit, which included some countries in Southeast Asia as well as Australia, New Zealand, Russia and the US, gave its backing to the endeavor.
