Unknown assailants attacked a Puja Mandap and desecrated idols of Hindu goddesses in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur early today.
The incident took place at the Protapnagar Puja Mandap weeks ahead of the Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of Hindus, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.
“The makers, who were working on the idols for Durga Puja, left the mandap around 11:00pm last night,” said Chittaranjan Barman, president of Protapnagar Puja Committee.
“This morning, we found the idols of Durga and Ganesh desecrated,” he added.
Mohibul Islam Khan, additional superintendent of police in Sherpur; Mozammel Haque, Jhenaigati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO); and AKM Fasi-ur-Rahman, officer-in-charge of local police station, visited the spot this morning.
Biswajit Roy, president of Jhinaigati Upazlia Puja Udjapan Parishad, condemned the attack and urged the administration to take immediate measures to punish the perpetrators.
