Tibetan Buddhist monastery to open in Bloomington
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — A 21,000-square-foot Tibetan Buddhist monastery under construction in Bloomington for two years is scheduled to open this weekend.
The multi-million dollar Gaden KhachoeShing (GAH-din kah-ZHA-shing) Buddhist Monastery will open with ceremonies on Saturday.
Resident monk Jamyang Lama tells The Herald-Times (http://bit.ly/1r3FPLc ) the monastery will be a great asset for a community already known for its diversity. He calls it a "hybrid monastery" because it was built with sustainability in mind. He says being environmentally conscious fits into Buddhist teachings.
A man-made waterfall and pond next to the monastery were created as part of a low-flow irrigation system. Rainwater collected on the monastery roof flows to the pond and back again and is used to water gardens.
The new monastery sits on 128 acres.
