Ruins of the Buddhist Vihara at Paharpur, Bangladesh

UNESCO declared this Vihara as a world heritage site in 1985 Ruins of the Buddhist Vihara at Paharpur previously known as Somapura Mahavihara is situated in present Naogaon District in Rajshahi Division at the north-west part of Bangladesh. The ruins of the Buddhist Monastic Complex is the most remarkable and significant pre-Islamic monument in Bangladesh. The king of Varendri-Magadha, Dharmapala Vikramshila, founded the monastery. It is an sign of the upsurge of Mahayana Buddhism in the then Bengal from the 7th century onwards.
