Concern Over Islamic State's Threat Against Borobudur
Individuals and organizations around the world have rallied to express concern over a recent threat made against Borobudur by the Islamic State and its Indonesian supporters. The Javanese temple, which dates to the 9th century, is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site and was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1991. The Islamic State had initially posted a threat on Facebook on 15 August: “God willing, (Borobudur) will be demolished by Islamic caliphate mujahidin.” The statement also quoted an article from a radical website in which extremist cleric Hartono Ahmad Jaiz condemned various projects to erect statues around Indonesia as un-Islamic.
